The tension between representational painting and a more reactive narration of the observed has been a constant underlying theme of my work. I am haunted by de Kooning’s assertion that “Content is a glimpse of something, an encounter….like when one passes something and it makes an impression..”.
Though I am drawn to this description of imagery I continue to refer to my surroundings as the starting point for much of my work.

For the past few years I have used the landscape as my touchstone. Though my work is clearly based on my perceptions it is just as much intended to communicate an experience rather than record visual details. My memory and instincts play as much a role in the life of my paintings as the real places that they refer to.  

The act of painting is the expression of a wordless language that, when successful, is a direct conduit to human experience.
